Embassies in South Africa: Addresses & Phone Numbers

An embassy may be defined as the official residence or office of an ambassador. An embassy is responsible for representing the home country, for handling major diplomatic issues (such as negotiations), and for preserving the rights of its citizens abroad.

An embassy helps to preserve and protect the relationship between the host country and the country represented by that particular embassy office. The embassy can be a point of contact, or base of communication, between two countries.

At this point, we must differentiate between an embassy and a consulate. A country will have just one Embassy in another nation whereas it will have a number of consulates in various cities. An embassy is the larger representation, but a consulate is only a smaller version of the embassy.

Consulates in a sense can be called junior embassies. Embassies are permanent diplomatic missions generally located in a county’s capital, while consulates are located only in bigger cities and not in the capital city.

While Ambassadors, who are high-ranking diplomatic representatives of a country, represent the Embassy, Consuls represent the Consulates.

While Embassies deal with major diplomatic tasks, Consulates deal with minor diplomatic tasks. The number of Consulates depends on the requirement.

The main task of Consulates is to foster trade and maintain commercial links between the two nations. Moreover, the Consulates handle issues relating to visas, passports and also handle tourists and expats.

What then is the use of an embassy, and why do you need to know the addresses? Simple. An embassy offers many services that may be of help, especially if you’re living in a foreign land. They include;

  • To replace a lost or stolen passport, once identity has been verified.
  • To contact family, friends, or employers back home.
  • To help locate lost, missing [or presumed missing] travellers.
  • To help obtain medical care and recommend local medical facilities.
  • To provide information on local English-speaking doctors, as well as their training and
  • To help transfer funds or receive funds from home.
  • To provide assistance for a death overseas, including notification to family and returning remains to the United States.
  • To provide emergency assistance, if you’re a victim of crime.
  • To provide information about the local criminal justice process.
  • To visit you in jail if you’re arrested and advise you of your rights under local law.
  • To provide sources for local English-speaking attorneys and their areas of legal expertise.
  • To register overseas births to American parents.
  • To notarize documents and supply governmental forms.
