My Brother’s Keeper tells the story of the Shabalala family, a wealthy and powerful clan that is drawn into a deadly succession battle of its own making. The show stars Wiseman Mncube as Nqubeko, the headstrong and overambitious son of a mistress who is tired of being side-lined by his father. Nqubeko decides to break the rules of “ukungena” (the Zulu custom of marrying a deceased brother’s widow) by going after his brother’s widow, Fakazile (played by Zola Nombona), the woman who holds the controlling power to the Shabalala family empire.

Episode 1
The Shabalala Empire is under threat of closing down. Nqubeko, the middle child, has an elaborate plan of how he will save the family company from demise and finally earn his place at the top. His father, has other plans and deals him the ultimate betrayal by turning to one of his other sons for help and partnership.

Episode 2
Tragedy befalls the Shabalala Empire and lands one of the family fighting for his life. Mshengu, the patriarch, resorts to drastic measures to save his son from misery. Nqubeko offers to be Fakazile’s shoulder to cry on in the face of the tragedy that’s shaken the family. Ndumiso returns home after being bailed out and Mshengu ignores him.

In the midst of tragedy, Fakazile makes a move that shocks the Shabalalas to the core. Nqubeko finds himself caught in between two warring camps. An unexpected guest is heading to the Shabalala home after years of being estranged.

Fakazile gives in to the burial demands of the Shabalala family, however she holds an ace up her sleeve. Thoba prepares to break the grip of his mother in order to claim a place at the Mshengu table. Khwezi’s final journey breaks his mother MaMchunu.

Episode 5
While Fakazile makes plans to cut the cord tying her to the Shabalalas, Mshengu enlists an old-age cultural tradition to keep her part of the family. Nqubeko prepares for his moment of glory when Mshengu calls a family meeting and delivers a blow that shocks everyone. Koketso sets the record straight with Sibusiso when he stands up for her at work.
