Gill College is a South African high school located in Somerset East, Sarah Baartman District Municipality. It was established as a university in 1869.
Dr. William Gill, the man behind the school’s name, passed away in 1863 and left an estate worth £23,000 (which would be worth £2,341,263 in 2021) to start a college for higher learning. March 18, 1869 saw the official opening of Gill College. The building’s design was inspired by the University of Glasgow.
Gill College was transformed into a high school in 1903 as a result of a change in educational regulations. Prior to 1928 and again after 1965, the high school was coeducational; in the interim, it was a boys’ school.
