The Post-Graduate Diploma in Community Development Programme is an advanced programme offered at NQF Level 8 and provides students with skills for community development.

The PGDIP (Community Development) is a one (1) year full-time programme which comprises of 120 credits and can be completed in two (2) years on the case of part-time.

Students with a Bachelor’s Degree related to community development are accepted into the Programme.

Programme Structure

The PGDIP (Community Development) is structured into five (5) modules which are:

  • Theory & Development of Community Work
  • Social Policy and Planning, Social Legislation & Administration
  • Community Work Practice
  • Research Theory & Project Management
  • Research Project – Research is conducted under the guidance of a supervisor. At the end of the programme, students are expected to produce a mini-research dissertation.

Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work (PhD)

The doctoral programme is research-based. Students that are selected in this programme are expected to develop new knowledge in social work education, fieldwork practice, theory, and policies.

It is also expected that students at this level should demonstrate independent learning and critical thinking. The PhD is offered at NQF level 10 and comprise of 360 credits.

Only students with a Master’s degree in Social Work will be accepted in this programme.
