Wendy Petrie (born August 1971) is a New Zealand journalist and television presenter. She is best known for presenting 1 News at Six alongside Simon Dallow for 14 years.

Petrie interviews athletes for her podcast The Word with Wendy Petrie. She also does media training for Ross’ company and is an event MC. She has covered current affairs events in the local and international space.

Early Life

Wendy Petrie was born in August 1971. Her mother, Carole Petrie, is a registered nurse who became a teacher’s aide. She was a dancer and cheerleader as a teenager and through university.

Where has Wendy Petrie worked?

Petrie is a trained dancer. She starred as a cheerleader in Auckland rugby’s 91FM troupe and was a cheerleader in the 1980s and early 1990s. Her background as a trained dancer helps me so much as a news anchor.

Petrie worked as a writer for Independent Radio News bulletins. Later, she started working for TV3.

The presenter worked as a reporter, news anchor, and weather presenter on 3 News. She was a regular fill-in host on the late-night news programme Nightline.

In 2001, Wendy flew to Canada and became a newsreader for CTV NewsNet. She also worked as a substitute newsreader on the morning programme Canada AM. She covered the report on the September 11 attacks for 3 News.

Upon her return to New Zealand in 2003, Wendy Petrie joined TVNZ. She was a fill-in presenter for all One News bulletins. She started co-anchoring the 6 pm edition of One News alongside Simon Dallow in 2006, taking over from Judy Bailey as the primary female anchor.

Petrie lost her full-time news reading role at TVNZ after COVID in 2020. She has covered some current affairs events in New Zealand, including the September 11 attacks in New York and the Royal Wedding in London.

Petrie covered the 100th ANZAC Day anniversary in Gallipoli and the Christchurch earthquakes. She was among the best-dressed women on David Hartnell MNZM’s Best Dressed List in November 2020.

Wendy Petrie is married to television director Ross Peebles. She has three children – two daughters, Addison (known as Addie) and Olivia (Liv), and a son, Zach.

Her eldest daughter, Addie, is on a rowing scholarship to the United States. She has a home in Auckland.
