Career

They were influenced musically by Take 6 and Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Five Alive, who ruled Kenya’s radios in 1995, released their debut album Five Alive in 1996 and even embarked on a European tour the same year.
Wainaina was inspired to pursue a professional music career by his time with the group. He played and made an appearance in the 1996 music video for the song “Get in the Driver’s Seat,” which was written by the UN Drug Control Program for a highly effective anti-drug campaign covering 20 countries.
This not only prepared him for his eventual solo career but also encouraged him to become involved in the social activism and concern that permeates much of his songs.
After the band split up in 1997, Wainaina enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where he eventually earned a music degree with a songwriting and record engineering emphasis. He received an honours degree.
