Johan Burger is a South African businessman and the CEO of FirstRand. He succeeded Sizwe Nxasana who after nine years as CEO retired.
He was previously the company’s CFO. He graduated from the University of Johannesburg.
Career
Johan began his career at Rand Merchant Bank in 1986, where he held a variety of positions before being named financial director in 1995.
He was named financial director of the FirstRand banking group in 1998, and CFO of the FirstRand group in 2002, following the incorporation of FirstRand Limited in 1998.
Johan was appointed group COO in 2009 and deputy CEO in October 2013, in addition to his position as group CFO. In October of 2015, he was appointed CEO. With impact from March 31, 2018, Johan stepped down as CEO.
He served as executive director until August 31, 2018, when he transitioned to the non-executive director on September 1, 2018.
